Select the right conveyor system for your product flow: an editorial warehouse scene showing the working context
A warehouse scene related to material handling and the decisions discussed in this guide.

Choose a conveyor by product shape, flow direction, transfer points, speed needs and the work around it. The useful answer depends on the local layout, the goods and the people who use the process, so this guide starts with observations that can be checked on site.

Describe the product

Start with the item that must travel: its dimensions, surface, weight distribution and packaging stability. A conveyor that works for rigid cartons may be a poor fit for soft packs, irregular loads or products that need careful orientation.

Map the transfers

Most problems appear where one movement becomes another. Mark receiving, accumulation, transfer and discharge points, then note where a person inspects, scans or repacks. The route should show what happens when a product is late, damaged or diverted.

Choose a speed the team can manage

The fastest line is not automatically the best line. Consider how quickly people can respond, clear a jam and inspect an item. Leave space for safe access and maintenance, and document the operating assumptions so a future change does not quietly remove the margin.
