Compare pallet racking and shelving by load, access frequency, aisle needs and future flexibility. The useful answer depends on the local layout, the goods and the people who use the process, so this guide starts with observations that can be checked on site.
Start with the goods
Pallet racking makes sense when goods arrive and leave on pallets, while shelving suits smaller items that are handled piece by piece. Begin with the unit load rather than the furniture name. Note the load shape, stability, packaging and whether a person or a vehicle will retrieve it.
Measure access before capacity
A storage plan is also a movement plan. Frequent picks need clear access and a layout that does not make every retrieval disturb another location. Occasional reserve stock can accept a different arrangement. Record the path from receiving to storage and from storage to dispatch before fixing an aisle pattern.
Leave room for change
A good choice still works when the range changes. Keep a short record of current load types, access frequency and the constraints that shaped the decision. Review that record when stock turns, packaging or handling equipment changes. It is more useful than choosing by the highest headline capacity.

Once the choice between racking and shelving is settled, the structure itself still has to be inspected and maintained over its working life. Bolts can be tightened and replaced, but the older load-bearing elements in many industrial buildings were shaped by heat rather than assembly. A short account of the hot iron trade explains how fire, anvil and tongs decided the form of wrought and cast iron parts, and what a warehouse team can read from the metal it inspects. It is useful background when judging whether an existing frame or fitting can carry the loads a new storage layout will place on it.
